Perception vs. Reality

Kelsey's theme of Perception vs. Reality was a topic that I found to be extremely interesting.  Its a theme that I can relate to; as can most people.  How one perceives themselves often differs from how they really look.  For the majority of people, there is at least one thing; if not more; that they wish to change about themselves.  Whether its a teenage boy who wants to be taller, or a woman who wishes she looked younger or thinner, everyone sees themselves differently.
We are our owns worst critics.  Its a sad thing to say, yet so true among most people.  Its amazing how low our self-esteem is in the world and is a rising problem,  That is how illnesses like bulimia and anorexia have become such a huge issue. People look at photos of models that have been altered or changed with programs like Photoshop, and think its real life.  People with anorexia or bulimia look in the mirror and see an altered or larger image of themselves.  When in reality, they are usually no where near that.
For most people, their body issues never reach to be that extreme.  But issues with too much plastic surgery have also been a rising problem.  Now, I'm not saying that everyone should be cocky and full of how amazing looking they are because everyone sees themselves as imperfect.  No ones perfect and it would be boring if people were.  We just need to learn to accept and appreciate our flaws.  As soon as we learn to perceive and accept our real image, the sooner issues like anorexia and bulimia end.

  1. I think that the idea of flaws is interesting, because for the most part people view reality as being very flawed and want to precive it in other ways to make it seem better. But I agree with you that people need to accept the flaws in the world and try to embrase them. I think that many illnesses have started due to people not accepting their flaws.

  2. You made a lot of great points. I agree completely with the perceptions we have in ourselves and our own flaws. And it is true, we are our own worst critics, and this project is going to highlight on a lot of these issues. I think this has a lot of potential to push social issues and to make people think about how they differ perception and reality.

  3. Perfection is an interesting point when talking about perception vs reality. People may often find themselves to be ugly, unattractive or even beautiful, but someone else may think the complete opposite. There are so many flaws that fill the mind of a person because they feel like their nose is too big or their lips are too small. This perception is more than likely caused by peer influences or the media. What one person may see as beautiful, another person may see as down right ugly. Touching on the perfections of perception and reality will bring out an idea of the good.

  4. I think you have made some really good points once again, it's unfortunate that so many people have such a poor image of themselves. I can completely understand because I had an accident in 2007 and now I suffer from a debilitating condition that makes it nearly impossible for me to exercise without severe pain. Since then I have put on like 50+ pounds and can't take it off so I have super low self esteem and my perception of myself is quite poor. But I feel that at least I have a legitimate reason, unfortunately people that suffer from most eating disorders are the way they are because they look at advertising and models, as you pointed out, then they think that they aren't living up to what is expected of them. It's a shame that the advertising Co's don't change their approach because they could have such a positive affect on how people perceive themselves, they know the ill effects that are caused by their paradigm and they choose to do nothing about it.
